How to Acclimate New Home for Our Betta Splendens

Submitted by on 23 July 2010 – 19:26

Fish are hypersensitive to their surroundings and need to be gently introduced to their new home, especially for betta splendens. If we bring our fish home and plop him directly into this new tank without acclimating him properly, he may experience any number of stressors causing severe trauma or even shock-induced death. It’s vital to check the basic parameters including temperature and pH before adding betta splendens to their new aquarium.

When we bring our betta splendens home do not put him directly into his new tank or aquarium. First, makesure that the water in the tank is room temperature; then, place your betta, in its bag from the pet store, in the prepared tank for 5 minutes. This will allow your betta to acclimate to the water temperature in the tank. After the acclimation period you can release your betta splendens into its tank. This first day is stressful so don’t feed him and avoid disturbing him any more than necessary.
